13th Winter Olympic Games Lake Placid, New York, U.S.A., 1980 U.S. Hockey Miracle on Ice
Issued by the United States on Feb. 1, 1980, this attached block of four mint stamps commemorated the 13th winter Olympic Games, held in Lake Placid, N.Y., U.S.A., Feb. 12-24, 1980. The featured sports are speed skating, downhill skiing, the ski jump, and ice hockey. For U.S. hockey fans, these Games were special; the U.S. team, composed of amateurs and college players and led by coach Herb Brooks, defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union 4-3 (the U.S. team entered the competition seeded 7th; the Soviet Union was seeded first). This game has since been known as the Miracle on Ice. The United States went on to win the gold medal by defeating Finland 4-2 in the final game.

Scott Cat.# 1795-1798 (1798a)

The actual size of this block of four stamps is 51 x 80 mm (possibly attached sheet selvage is not included in this measurement).
