General Billy Mitchell Plate# Block of 4 United States, 1999
General William "Billy" Mitchell (1879-1936) was an aviation pioneer; a founder of the U.S. Air Force and the best-known early proponent of air power in the United States. He first served in the U.S. Army during the Spanish-American war; during WW I, he was the first American to fly over enemy lines in combat and was known as a superb flyer with outstanding leadership skills. In 1918, he was appointed commander of the U.S. Army Air Service on the Western front. Following the Armistice, Mitchell became Assistant Chief of the Air Service. Following his resignation in 1926, he continued to speak out in support of stronger U.S. air power. This item is a mint plate number block of four self-adhesive stamps featuring Mitchell. Issued by the U.S. Postal Service on July 30, 1999. Scott Cat.# 3330
