Jim Thorpe United States, 1984
Issued by the United States Postal Service on May 24, 1984, this mint commemorative stamp pays tribute to the legendary American athlete, Jim Thorpe. The stamp depicts Thorpe on the sidelines in his football uniform with helmet in hand. At the 1912 Summer Olympics (Stockholm), Thorpe became the first athlete to win both the pentathlon and the decathlon. Later, he was stripped of his medals when it was learned that he had briefly played semi-professional baseball in 1910. In 1983, the International Olympic Committee returned replicas of his medals to his family. He excelled on the Football and Baseball fields as well. Scott Cat.# 2089
