United States, 1964 Contemporary Christmas Block of 4 Untagged variety
Issued on November 9, 1964, this set of four mint Christmas stamps was a first for the United States Post Office: this issue featured four different designs in a regular size pane of 100 stamps. The stamps depict the plants Holly, Mistletoe, Poinsettia, and a pine tree cone. This block, a variety of the 1964 Christmas issue, was produced with phosphorescent tagging (requires short wave UV light to view, though the stamps have a more yellowish tint than the untagged variety). Scott cat.# 1254a-1257a (1257c). The purpose of tagging was to permit automated "facing" (placing an envelope in the correct orientation) of letters for machine cancellation of the stamp. The block of four stamps measures 51 x 43 mm (the above image is an enlargement).
