This mint, imperforate (no perforation holes; as issued), sheet of four stamps was issued by Australia in 1978 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first trans-Pacific flight. Two Australians (Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm) and two Americans (Harry Lyon and James Warner) flew in the aircraft "Southern Cross" from Oakland, California, to Brisbane, Australia. With stops in Hawaii and Fiji, the trip required 9 days to complete. The stamps feature two of the aviators (Smith and Ulm) and the "Southern Cross" aircraft.
