This complete set of eight large mint stamps (provided as an attached block of 8) was issued by the United States to mark the centenary of the Universal Postal Union organization. The function of this organization is to help standardize mail rates and expedite mail delivery worldwide. The stamps feature the following paintings, each with a letter writing theme: "Lady Writing a Letter" (by Terboch), "Still Life" (by Chardin), "Ms. John Douglas" (by Gainsborough), "Don Antonio Noriega" (by Goya), "Portrait of Michelangelo" (by Raphael), "Five Feminine Virtues" (by Hokusai), "Old Scraps" (by Peto), and "The Lovely Reader" (by Liotard).
