Lincoln Sesquicentennial Issue United States, 1958-9.Set of Four Mint Stamps
Abraham Lincoln was commemorated during 1958-1959 with four mint stamps; the design on each stamp represents a different art form. The green stamp features a beardless Lincoln (painting by George P.A. Healy); the 3c "plum" stamp depicts the head of Lincoln (sculpture by Gutzon Borglum); the blue stamp features a representation of a statue (By Daniel Chester French- taken from a line and pastel drawing by Fritz Busse); and the 4c brown stamp illustrates Lincoln and Douglas debating.

While each stamp commemorates the birth of Abraham Lincoln, the "Lincoln and Douglas" stamp additionally marked the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln-Douglas debates held in 1859 when the two were campaining for U.S. Senator. Although Douglas was re-elected, Lincoln gained favorable exposure and was elected president two years later.

Condition: Mint, never hinged.
Scott Catalogue Number(s): United States #1113-1116

The actual size of each stamp is either 26 x 40 mm (the horizontal stamps) or 40 x 26 mm (the vertical stamps).
