United States, 1974 Contemporary Christmas Stamp First U.S. Self-Adhesive Stamp
Item ID: CH38

Details

This mint 1974 contemporary Christmas stamp was the first self-adhesive stamp issued by the United States; the copies we supply are on their original backing paper (release liner). Unfortunately, the producers of this stamp did not realize until well after the issue date that the applied adhesive migrates into the paper; all copies therefore suffer from some discoloring. The stamp design features a dove weather vane atop Mount Vernon. Scott Cat.# 1552

United States, 1975 Traditional Christmas Stamp
Item ID: CH39

Details

This mint 1975 Christmas stamp (issued Oct. 14) was designed by Stevan Dohanos and features the painting "Madonna and Child," by Ghirlandaio. Due to an impending postage rate change, the stamp was issued without a denomination- the date of a change from 10c to 13c was not known at the time of printing; the stamp ended up being issued prior to the rate change and it is thus a 10c stamp.
