The United States issued 13 stamps over a 15-month period during 1943-44 for the purpose of recognizing the countries occupied by the Axis powers during WW II. The issue was intended to reinforce the free world's determination to liberate these countries. This item is a complete set of 13 mint "name" blocks (a block of four stamps for each of the 13 issued stamps; there is one name block - equivalent to a plate number block - per sheet of 50 stamps). "Remember the Maine" is a slogan of the Spanish-American War. The United States battleship Maine mysteriously exploded and sank in the harbor of Havana, Cuba, in 1898. The American public blamed the sinking on Spain, which then controlled Cuba. President William McKinley yielded to public pressure and asked Congress to declare war.
