The design, taken from the famous World War II photograph by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press, shows U.S. Marines raising the American Flag on Mount Suribachi on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. The United States Postal Service honored Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist William Henry "Bill" Mauldin with the issuance of this mint self-adhesive stamp on March 31, 2010. During WWII, Mauldin was with the 180th Infantry Regiment; he participated in the invasion of Sicily, the Salerno campaign and the amphibious assault at Anzio. During his time as an infantryman, he received permission to produce cartoons for the division's newspaper. His creation of the characters Willie and Joe (infantrymen) led to notoriety and fame.
