Black troops of these regiments were the first authorized to serve in the U.S. Army during peacetime and they played a significant role in the settlement of the American West. This mint stamp, issued on September 27, 1944, honors the brave resistance of Army Gen. Jonathan M. Wainwright's American and Philippine troops under attack by the Japanese during World War II.
