Oregon Territory Centennial United States, 1948

This Oregon Territory issue commemorates the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Oregon Bill by President James Polk in 1848. The two men featured on the stamp are Jason Lee and Dr. John McLoughlin. Lee petitioned Congress for Territory status. McLaughlin, known as the "Father of Oregon," served as administrator for the Hudson's Bay Company. The stamp additionally features a covered wagon and oxen. Issued on August 14, 1948. In 1898, the U.S. issued a series of nine stamps commemorating western expansion; the $1.00 stamp from that set, known as "The Western Cattle in Storm," is arguably the most popular U.S. commemorative stamp ever issued.
