This mint set of four stamps, issued by the United States on May 3, 2000, pays tribute to the following heroes of World War I and World War II : Maj. Gen. John L. Hines (1868-1968), Gen. Omar N. General William "Billy" Mitchell (1879-1936) was an aviation pioneer; a founder of the U.S. Air Force and the best-known early proponent of air power in the United States. This is a mint self-adhesive stamp. The first day of issue was July 30, 1999.

This mint self-adhesive stamp, issued on Oct. 14, 1997, pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the historic 1947 flight at Edward's Air Force Base in which Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier with a Bell X-1 rocket aircraft. This was the first time a piloted aircraft flew faster than Mach 1. This flight occurred during the first year of existence of the U.S. Department of the Air Force.

This mint stamp, issued by the United States on Sept. 18, 1997, commemorates the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Department of the Air Force, the youngest branch of the U.S. armed forces. The design features the United States Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team flying F-16 fighter jets in close "Diamond-Four" formation.

This mint stamp, issued on Jan. 8, 1965, commemorated both 150 years of peace between England and the United States, and the sesquicentennial of the Battle of New Orleans. The Battle of New Orleans took place on Jan. 8, 1815, and was the final major battle of the War of 1812.
