This mint stamp was issued during 1945 (July 11) to honor the U.S. Marine Corps. The design, taken from the famous World War II photograph by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press , shows U.S. Marines raising the American Flag on Mount Suribachi on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. The stamp was printed in a color that was intended to match that of the marine uniform.
