The design, taken from the famous World War II photograph by Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press , shows U.S. Marines raising the American Flag on Mount Suribachi on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. The stamp was printed in a color that was intended to match that of the marine uniform.
