Issued on July 1, 1988, this cancelled stamp commemorates the USSR Hockey team- winners of the Gold Medal at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Canada. The stamp features a Russian Hockey player and the Olympic emblem.

Issued by the United States on Feb. 1, 1980, this attached block of four mint stamps commemorated the 13th winter Olympic Games, held in Lake Placid, N.Y., U.S.A., Feb. 12-24, 1980. The featured sports are speed skating, downhill skiing, the ski jump, and ice hockey. For U.S. hockey fans, these Games were special; the U.S. team, composed of amateurs and college players and led by coach Herb Brooks, defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union 4-3. This game has since been known as the Miracle on Ice. The United States went on to win the gold medal by defeating Finland 4-2 in the final game.
