Issued by the United States on Feb. 1, 1980, this attached block of four mint stamps commemorated the 13th winter Olympic Games, held in Lake Placid, N.Y., U.S.A., Feb. 12-24, 1980. The featured sports are speed skating, downhill skiing, the ski jump, and ice hockey. For U.S. hockey fans, these Games were special; the U.S. team, composed of amateurs and college players and led by coach Herb Brooks, defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union 4-3. This game has since been known as the Miracle on Ice. The United States went on to win the gold medal by defeating Finland 4-2 in the final game.
