The United States Postal Service issued this mint stamp on June 26, 1995, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the the United Nations international organization. In 1945, following WWII, the UN was founded to replace the League of Nations.

The Marshall Islands (former U.S. Trust Territory) paid tribute to U.S. military heroes of the air with the release of this mint sheet of 16 stamps on April 28, 2009. 15 heroes are represented (their names are inscribed on the stamps). The stamp in the bottom right-hand corner features a Marshall Islands map, birds, outrigger canoe, and dolphin.

This mint stamp, issued on December 10, 1951, commemorated the 175th anniversary of the "Battle of Long Island," August 27, 1776. British and Hessian troops attacked the American fortifications at what is now Prospect Park in Brooklyn. The troops overpowered the Americans and captured their comander, Gen. John Sullivan. Gen. Washington, with additional troops, arrived late in the day and skillfully withdrew the remaining American forces in a night retreat.

Featuring a Cival War Confederate soldier and a United Confederate Veteran, this mint stamp commemorates the final reunion of UCV on May 30, 1951 (also the stamp issue date), in Norfolk VA. The UCV was organized in New Orleans in 1889.

Issued on Feb. 26, 1946 this mint stamp honored the achievments of the U.S. Merchant Marine in World War II. The engraved design is from a composite of photographs of two Liberty Ships, the "James Madison" and the "John W. Troy."

Issued on Nov. 10, 1945, this mint stamp honored the U.S. Coast Guard's service in World War II. The Coast Guard is the nation's oldest uniformed service; it participated in every major invasion of the war. Featured on the stamp is a Coast Guard landing craft and supply ship.
