This mint, imperforate (no perforation holes; as issued), sheet of four stamps was issued by Australia in 1978 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first trans-Pacific flight. Two Australians (Charles Kingsford Smith and Charles Ulm) and two Americans (Harry Lyon and James Warner) flew in the aircraft "Southern Cross" from Oakland, California, to Brisbane, Australia. This mint stamp, issued by the United States on May 20, 1977, commemorates the 50th anniversary of Charles A. Lindbergh's epic solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. The stamp features his plane, "The Spirit of St. Louis," in flight over the ocean.

Igor Sikorsky designed and manufactured many early helicopters. The United States paid tribute to this aviation pioneer with the issuance of this mint airmail stamp on June 23, 1988. The stamp features Sikorsky and his VS-300 helicopter.

The United States Postal Service issued this mint airmail stamp on December 30, 1980, to honor the aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss. Curtiss was an early aviator and aircraft designer and manufacturer. He is well known for his invention and development of the aileron and for his design and production of the first successful seaplanes and amphibious airplanes.

With this mint airmail stamp, the United States Postal Service paid tribute to Blanche Stuart Scott, the first American woman to make a solo flight. Scott made her flight in early September, 1910. The issue date for this stamp was December 30, 1980.
