This attractively engraved mint stamp was issued on May 28, 1948, to honor the four heroic United States Army chaplains who sacrificed themselves for their comrades when the S.S. Dorchester sank on February 3, 1943. Two ministers, a priest, and a rabbi, they gave up their own life vests so that others might live. Three of the four chaplains were Boy Scouts or Boy Scout Leaders.
